Feeding the hungry, click by click...

Back when I was at uni, the internet buzz was about the Hungersite, a place where you apparently clicked a button to donate a teeny amount of money to charity. I visited it regularly, then wondered if anything actually happened, and then stopped altogether.

Well, the site's back in a new form. Now, rather than having us mindlessly pressing a "Click Here" button, you can engage your brain while getting other people to pay for food. It's called Freerice.com, and it really does work. And it's added an incentive game to keep you clicking more than once. A vocabulary test.

For every vocabulary question you get right, a small number of grains of rice are donated to charity by the sponsors of the site. I visited, and kept having to repress the mental image of some poor retired person meticulously counting out the ten grains for each correct click.

"Barry, they've got another question right. Put another ten in the bag!"
"Yes, Marge"
"Another question, Barry! Have you finished that lot? They've got another question right. Put another ten grains in the bag, Barry. Did you hear me?"
"Yes, Marge"

Sorry. It's just my twisted imagination. Visit the site. Hopefully you can get more than my attempt of 46 vocabulary points!
