- Game consoles generally provide a choice of death, speeding, death, or violence in their line-up of games to play. There needs to be something suitable for smaller children.
- I need exercise, so the chance to flail my arms wildly instead of just pressing buttons is appealing at various times. Our long winters make it difficult to get exercise.
- We don't have room for a treadmill in our house.
Serious gamers may scoff. Non-gamers are probably thinking, "Why????"
It's just fun. Oh, and we've already broken one of our light fittings...

I have no idea what the heck it is!
I only know because I put my cursor on it, and the information line at the bottom of my screen told me it was a Nintendo wiisystem. I still don't know how to pronounce wii...
It's pronounced "Wee", apparently, and it is a game system. You play tennis by swinging your arms as if hitting a tennis ball, bowling with underarm movements to "bowl" the ball, golf by taking swings, etc etc. It's really quite fun, but then, I am rather a large child at times... :)
...and it is rather embarrassing that my 3-year-old can already beat me at golf.
It begs the question: why not actually play tennis or golf?
(not that I'm being rude to you - I'm genuinely curious as to why we make real games into 'pretend' ones.)
You haven't lived through a Lithgow winter, have you? :)
Sorry, that was a bit facetious. The serious answer to your question is:
a) For weather reasons, getting out on a golf course or tennis court is not always feasible
b) this can be set up in two minutes, as opposed to getting dressed in sports gear, finding babysitters for the children, driving to the sports centre, hiring court at decent time etc etc. It's still fun to do all that, but it's not an everyday activity.
c) this is a bit of escapism
d) it can be played any hour of the day, so when you're stuck at home with napping children, you can still get some physical activity
e) it takes up far less room than a treadmill.
And, it's just fun. :)
